Local Politics Every state has local politicians elected to represent the people in their local community. Who are these local politicians? Many times they are your friends and neighbors--teachers, local business people, retired folks. People who are disgruntled with how things are or who think they can do a better job and improve things tend to run for local offices. People who are elected to local government positions many times do a thankless job. Their lives are changed, as they lose much of their privacy and free time. These folks don’t work 8 hours a day like the rest of us. They carry a daily work load, and then regularly attend evening meetings and events. Many times, they do this because they feel they can make a difference. Your local politicians are elected to represent you and your neighbors. They can only do that if you tell them where you stand on the issues that are important to your local area. They can only represent you if you tell them how you feel. It is your local politician’s job to represent you, to speak up for you and to protect your interests in local government. It is your job to make sure your elected representatives know where you stand, and why. Contributor's Note I have worked with local elected officials in state government for almost 20 years.
